Bullish Buffett: Bank on it [May. 8th, 2012|12:39 pm]

Warren Buffett preached to the choir yesterday at his annual meeting, telling his investors all is well in the US banking system.

“The American banking system is in fine shape. The European system was gasping for air a few months back,” the Berkshire Hathaway chief told a crowd of nearly 40,000.

Berkshire has more than $19 billion invested in the US banking system.

Buffett is the largest shareholder with a $12 billion stake in Wells Fargo and last year injected $5 billion into Bank of America in preferred stock and warrants. Berkshire also has a $2.2 billion in shares in US Bancorp.

Many in the crowd at the so-called “Woodstock for Capitalists” said that although shares of Berkshire have failed to keep pace with the S&P 500 index over the past three years, they were still solidly behind Buffett.

“All companies and all shares lag from time to time,” said Tim Hartch, co-manager of the $1.8 billion BBH Core Select fund.

Ovechkin gets physical for Capitals in win over Rangers [May. 7th, 2012|04:36 pm]

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin may have scored a goal to help the Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers yesterday to even the Eastern Conference semifinals at two games apiece, but it was his hit on Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi that generated the most discussion about his performance.

Ovechkin, who has been suspended three times by the NHL, left his feet to deliver a shot to Girardi’s head and shoulder midway through the second period, earning a charging minor.

“He hit me in the head a bit there,” said Girardi, who stayed in the game. “It was the right call.”

STUFF CAP-PENS: The Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin (right) celebrates a goal with teammate Roman Hamrlik in the first period yesterday, before leaving his feet to deliver a hit on the Rangers’ Dan Girardi and being assessed a 2-minute penalty for charging.

Not surprisingly, the view from the opposing locker room was decidedly different.

“I just missed the puck,” Ovechkin said. “I tried to get the puck and I saw he was coming so I tried to protect myself.”

Ovechkin also denied catching Girardi in the head with the hit.

“The head?” he asked. “No, I think it was the shoulder.”

Girardi had a different view.

“He hit me in the head first,” he said.

Girardi also wasn’t interested in discussing whether the hit should have merited a 5-minute major, as opposed to the 2-minute minor Ovechkin received.

“I’m not going to judge that,” Girardi said. “There are a lot of hits throughout the game. He’s a big guy, he hits hard. I saw him coming, then he hit me.”

The Capitals seemed unconcerned about Ovechkin being subjected to any additional disciplinary measures by the league.

“I didn’t see the replay on it yet, but I think both of them were surprised they hit each other,” Washington coach Dale Hunter said. “It was incidental contact. ... They were looking down and they hit each other.”

“I was surprised that it was even a penalty,” Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner said. “Honestly, I’m not too worried about it. I’d be surprised if something happened.”

Despite the fact Ovechkin left his feet and hit Girardi — who didn’t have the puck — up high, it seemed unlikely the NHL would administer any additional fines or suspensions for the hit.

If the league does impose discipline on Ovechkin, though, it wouldn’t be the first time. He is a repeat offender in the league’s disciplinary system. The Capitals captain was forced to sit out twice for two games in 2009-10 — first for a knee-on-knee hit on the Hurricanes’ Tim Gleason and later for a hit on Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell.

Then, earlier this season, Ovechkin earned a three-game suspension for a hit on the Penguins’ Zbynek Michalek. When the suspension was handed down shortly before the All-Star Game, Ovechkin announced he wouldn’t be attending.

The Rangers have seen multiple incidents with hits to the head in the first two rounds. Against Ottawa, Carl Hagelin received a three-game suspension for elbowing Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson in the head, while Ottawa’s Matt Carkner was assessed a one-game suspension for repeatedly punching a defenseless Brian Boyle.

States of alarm on revenues [May. 6th, 2012|08:36 pm]

headshotTerry Keenan

While the headline number for joblessness fell to 8.1 percent on Friday for the month of April, there are some crueler numbers behind it.

News last week out of California suggests trouble is brewing. The report worth noting comes from Standard & Poor’s, and was confirmed by Gov. Jerry Brown’s office in Sacramento. S&P warns that weaker-than-expected income-tax receipts in California in April have blown an extra $1 billion hole in that state’s budget shortfall, and the year is only one-third over. And while all the numbers aren’t in for last month (typically the biggest month for tax receipts), California is far from alone in reporting revenue shortfalls due to fewer people paying income taxes. Massachusetts and Connecticut have recently reported disappointing numbers as well.

This marks a reversal of the slight improvement we saw in tax receipts during the fiscal year that ended in most states back in June 2011. And with state revenues still about 7 percent below their pre-crisis levels, the fact that income-tax receipts are trending lower again should be a red flag about the recovery.

Which brings us back to the jobs report. If the unemployment rate has fallen so far so fast in the past year, inquiring minds might wonder, why are state income-tax receipts under so much pressure?

Well, more than a half-million Americans disappeared from the labor force last month alone — that is, they stopped looking for work. When 552,000 people in one month decide they are not going to look for a job, that doesn’t bode well for the tax rolls going forward.

California hopes that tax revenues from the Facebook initial public offering will shine on the Golden State in the form of a one-time tax windfall of several billion dollars when Mark Zuckerberg and other Facebook founders exercise their stock options in the coming weeks, but other states won’t be so lucky.

Yes, an 8.1 percent unemployment rate sounds a lot better than 10 percent. But let’s face it, no one pays income taxes on a salary they don’t have or are no longer looking for.

Kentucky Derby too close to call [May. 5th, 2012|04:36 am]

headshotRay Kerrison

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On the eve of the Kentucky Derby, I don’t have the faintest idea who is going to win. But then, neither does anyone else.

When a master craftsman like D. Wayne Lukas, who has won 13 Triple Crown classics, studies the 20-horse field and throws up his arms in bewilderment, what chance does an apprentice like I have?

“It’s so deep and talented, one of the best fields I can remember,” Lukas said. “I can’t pick a favorite, I can’t pick a winner.”

Mike Harrington, an old trainer who will saddle Creative Cause, said: “Any one of 10 horses could win it.”

‘MEISTER’ RIGHT: Bodemeister trains on the track yesterday for tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby.

KENTUCKY DERBY BETTOR'S GUIDE

So this 138th running of the greatest horse race in America becomes the Dart Board Derby, where throwing a dart may make as much sense as analyzing form, pedigree, speed figures, distance and jockeys.

The problem is that modern racehorses — fragile, over medicated and sparingly raced — come to the Derby with so few races on their resumes that nobody can realistically evaluate their potential. It’s only when they lay it down in the Derby that the chaff is separated from the wheat.

Compounding this Derby is the uncertain pace at which it will be run. With a tearaway speedster such as Trinniberg in the field, the race could be run at suicidal fractions, effectively nullifying the other quality speed horses such as Bodemeister, Hansen, Union Rags, Gemologist, Take Charge Indy and set it up for a late rushing plodder.

But if Trinniberg sets sane fractions, the back markers will not have a prayer against the talented bunch up front.

So, what to do? I’m looking to cover both contingencies.

Easily the most impressive performance by any horse prepping for the Derby was Bodemeister’s rout of the Arkansas Derby, which he won by nearly 10 lengths, beating one of the best horses in the country, Secret Circle. His speed superiority towers over the field. He might be anything.

Harrington said: “He’s a freak.”

He will need to be to overcome the Derby’s most enduring jinx. Bodemeister never raced as a two-year-old and no horse like that has won the Derby since 1882. But the old rules don’t seem to apply today, so I’m going with the freak.

All horses have negatives. Consider everyone’s favorite, Union Rags. In his two biggest assignments, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Florida Derby, he found a way to lose. He will be ridden by Julien Leparoux, a French-born jockey, gifted and tough, but who likes to take his horses out the back, as they say. That style does not suit the front-pushing Union Rags.

Hansen won the Breeders’ Juvenile, but has not done much since except win the Gotham, a non-event in Derby history. He’s running the same speed figures as a two-year-old. He has not moved forward.

Gemologist is flawless. He has won all five starts, two at Churchill Downs. His speed figures have risen with every start, but his wide post 15 will test him. He comes from the same firm, WinStar Farms, who won the 2010 Derby with Super Saver.

The farm’s president, Elliot Walden, said, “Gemologist is the best horse we have ever brought to the Derby.” His opinion carries weight.

Then there are all the other contenders: Dullahan, who won the Blue Grass (he’s won two on synthetics, lost all three on dirt); Creative Cause, a real trouper who lost the Santa Anita Derby by a nose; Take Charge Indy, who ground out the Florida Derby by a length; I’ll Have Another, who won the Santa Anita Derby; Daddy Nose Best, who won the Sunland Derby; Done Talking, who took the Illinois Derby; Alpha who just missed the Wood Memorial, and Went the Day Well, who upset the Spiral.

No wonder the experts are confused and the morning line favorite is 4-1.

Still that may open the door for a longshot to spring yet another Derby upset. A horse like El Padrino, who boasts better Beyer speed figures than the vaunted Union Rags; Sabercat, who flew home to get third behind Bodemeister and Secret Circle in the Arkansas Derby; Daddy Long Legs, who won the Dubai Derby, even the forlorn Optimizer, who jetted home for second in the Rebel.

This is a Derby that appears to defy rational handicapping. Mister, hand me the dart!

Domurat, Poly Prep push past Fieldston in double OT [May. 3rd, 2012|12:36 pm]

Poly Prep knew that a win wasn't going to come easily.

“It was a battle,” said Poly Prep head coach Anni Zukauskas. “We needed that experience.”

It took overtime to decide a victor, but Poly Prep was able to gut out a 16-14 victory over Fieldston in girl's lacrosse Wednesday at Fieldston HS in the Bronx.

Poly Prep had penalty trouble, but still notched its second win of the season over Fieldston and was led by five tallies from Jane Tewksbury and four goals by Sam Domurat, two of which came in the extra frame.

Domurat's most important goals of the game came in the first overtime of the season for Poly Prep. After Kiera Grench scored her second goal of the game to hand a lead to Poly Prep with 2:06 left in the first half of overtime, Domurat scored a crucial goal just a minute later to give Poly Prep a 15-13 edge.

Just 20 seconds later, Jill Gold scored her fourth of the game for Fieldston. Poly Prep was able to stave off Fieldston in the second half of overtime, keeping the ball from the Eagles for most of the frame before Domurat scored her second extra time goal at the buzzer to seal the win.

“We showed a lot of character today,” Domurat said. “I got a lot of support from my teammate and got a couple of goals there. It felt really good to be lifted up to that level.”

It was a hard fought victory for Poly Prep. With just 31.7 seconds remaining in regulation Tewksbury notched her fifth goal of the game, breaking the tie and giving Poly Prep a 13-12 lead. The game was knotted again just 14 seconds later when Jenna Chasanoff scored for Fieldston with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal forced overtime, but Poly Prep eventually took over and won.

“I pushed to the goal,” said Tewksbury. “We knew we had to bring back the lead and it took a little pressure off. After they got it right back we knew we had to keep our head in the game. We knew we had to push hard in overtime.”

Poly Prep spread the scoring around as aside from Tewksbury, Domurat and Grench, Rosie Silber-Marker hit the net three times and Jessica Dahldorf scored twice. Meanwhile, Fieldston also had a lot of contributors as Gold and Chloe Chasanoff each scored four times, Jenna Chasanoff hit the net three times and Ryan Peer, Rowyn Paul and Emily Hamilton each notched one.

“This was our fourth overtime [period] of the season,” said Fieldston head coach Sara Gorman. “They worked hard and [the Chasanoffs] are a nice little duo. My team is starting to become more confident in their abilities to go to the goal.”

Ovie Kabba got the win between the pipes for Poly Prep while stopping nine shots. Sydney Bryant was in net for Fieldston and saved eight.

It was a bounce back league win for Poly Prep as it was coming off a recent loss against Riverdale.

“They needed that," said Zukauskas. "It’s a competitive league right now and the measure right now is who wants it more. My team wants it now but they have to show up every game and prove it.”

Comcast profit up 30% on broadband, NBC gains [May. 2nd, 2012|04:36 pm]

PHILADELPHIA -- Comcast said Wednesday its first-quarter profit gained 30 percent as the cable and television network operator benefited from the Super Bowl broadcast on NBC and continued growth at its core video and broadband units.

The company continued to shed video subscribers, but said the rate of defections slowed for the sixth consecutive quarter to 37,000, a five percent improvement.

Comcast and its peers have struggled in recent years with a slowdown in their traditional cable television businesses because of a weak economy and more viewers reducing or canceling video packages in favor of internet-based services.

Faced with ongoing video-subscriber losses, cable companies including Comcast are focusing more attention on their broadband and commercial services businesses, which tend to be more profitable because they are not burdened by television programming costs.

Comcast said it added 439,000 residential broadband subscribers during the first quarter, a five percent increase. But new voice subscribers fell off to 164,000, down 37 percent from a year earlier.

NBC presented the biggest source of growth for Comcast during the quarter, with revenue increasing 18 percent to $5.47 billion.

Comcast is attempting to revive the historically low-rated network, following its acquisition of a majority stake in January 2011. Revenue from NBC's broadcast television unit increased 37 percent during the quarter, helped by NBC's carriage of the Super Bowl and hit shows like "The Voice."

Revenue from filmed entertainment was up 22.3 percent on strong box-office results for movies including "The Lorax."

Overall, Comcast booked a profit of $1.22 billion, compared to $943 million a year earlier. On a pro forma basis, excluding the costs of the NBC Universal transaction, per-share earnings rose to 45 cents from 36 cents a year earlier; beating analysts expectations of 42 cents.

Total revenue increased 23 percent to $14.88 billion, or by 9.6 percent, after accounting for the NBC acquisition. The top-line figure beat analysts' expectations of $14.43 billion.

Revenue from video subscriptions increased 1.6 percent to $4.97 billion, while broadband revenue grew 10.3 percent to $2.32 billion.

Revenue from business services -- a growing market for Comcast that includes video, telephone and internet services for small companies -- increased 37 percent to $541 million.

New-look Nets open for Brooklyn business [May. 1st, 2012|12:33 am]

Hello, Brooklyn!

At midnight, the Nets officially ended their 35 years in New Jersey and became the Brooklyn Nets, finally completing a move that has been several years in the making.

“It’s very exciting to be moving on and heading to [Brooklyn],” said Brook Lopez, who will be among those on hand when the team officially unveils its new color scheme and logos this morning at an event near its new home, the Barclays Center. “I’m very anxious. ... I’d love to get it started right now.

“I think it’s something that’s going to have a ton of new energy, great energy, and something many people are going to want to be a part of.”

Ever since the team’s final home game in New Jersey ended last Monday night, the transition from New Jersey to Brooklyn has been in full effect. As soon as the game ended, visitors to the team’s website were greeted by a welcome page with a black background, with an outline of the team’s new logo and the Twitter hashtag #hellobrooklyn in white lettering underneath it, paying homage to their new home and to one of part-owner Jay-Z’s signature hits.

The Nets also are using the #hellobrooklyn campaign on billboards that have sprouted up around the city over the past few days. The billboards feature the same black-and-white color scheme, which will replace the red, white and blue colors the team has had since its beginnings in the ABA.

Avery Johnson has known this day was coming since he agreed to become the team’s head coach following the 2010 season. Now that it has finally come to pass, he’s excited about the possibilities the move across the Hudson River presents.

“It’s something that’s been coming for a while, and we’re finally here now,” said Johnson, who also will be at today’s unveiling. “It’s time for us to move on. We’ve anticipated this move for quite some time, and they have people here that have been anticipating this move long before I came here in June of 2010. I’m really excited for those folks and the people that are anticipating our arrival.

“Sure, there’s some sadness with fans that have been supporting this team for so long, but it’s just time to move on and we are all glad to be a part of this transition period and what’s waiting for our arrival in Brooklyn.”

The Nets hope they will arrive in Brooklyn with point guard Deron Williams, who will exercise the opt-out clause in his contract this summer and become an unrestricted free agent.

But Williams spoke positively of his trip to Brooklyn last week to visit the Barclays Center construction site. He will be the first test of how powerful the pull of playing in Brooklyn can be. The lures of playing inside the city limits of New York and in a brand-new arena are things Johnson thinks will draw free agents.

“We are in a new city and a new building,” he said. “You look at the effect it’s had on Oklahoma City. ... That’s a good example for me, just moving into a new building. You saw it a few years ago when the Mavericks moved from Reunion Arena to a new arena.

“For us, we are moving to a new city, a new state and just a terrific building. So we feel all those things are going to be assets for us in trying to acquire free agents.”
